BOM DISPOSAL AT MUNZLI-ON -C by Th Rector
Liik maany dog walkers, duuring th sumer wen Munzli Cfront is out of bownds, I am graatful for th taar rowd down to th C from Vaal Rood, out
toowards Trimingham. But it never ocuured to mee to ask Y it was theer.
I reesently discoverd that it was bilt by th Royal Engineers basd in Munzli after th war to get theer hevy eekwipment down to th beech for
landmiin clearans. Th memoorial on Munzli clif top is to remember th 26 men hoo diid maaking owr beeches saaf between 1944 and
1953.
Most of th sothern and eestern kowstliin of Ingland had been miind against Jurman invaashon duuring th war, but by 1950 they had all been
kleered xsept Fairliit Koov near Haystings and th streech of kowst from Munzli to Overstrand. Th miins had been set on th klifs, not th beech, but erooshon had tipd them on to th beeches or berid them in th clif, maaking thees streches very hazardus. They had simply been roopd off to wait for things to “setul”. But th trajic deths of too yung boys near Trimingham maade it cleer that th sityuaashon kud not B left any longer and from 1953 til th laat 60s th Royal Enjineers had bom disposal xperts working to maake th beechs saaf for orl.
Bruus Hog, hoo reeturned to liv in Munzli, was won of thoos Enjineers and hee insists that hee did not regard th work as heroik.
Akording to him it was a graat plaace to werk, owt on th beech oorl day, well caard for by th frendly naativs and out at th Ship or th Liifbowt for a piint in th eevening. At th saam time, Bruus admits to having fownd his first miin at loow tiid in th sand and, not wanting to get wet wen th tiid came back in, he pikd it up and carid it to th dry sand to blow it up. On returning to his maats and finding them speechless at his story, Bruuc reealized raather laat that yuu do not do that with a landmiin! Th fact was that thees men went owt each day with a pack of xploosiv on thair bak to atach to any miin they fownd and blow them up. They kud scan th beech won day with raather kruud metal detektors they were ishewd with, destroy a handful of miins thinking it was saaf. Th next day they wud find a hool bunch more, expoosd on xactly th saam streech of beech.
Others were blasting th clifs with a waater canon. or buldoozing th landsliids to reveal unxplowded miins. Not wot most of us wud
think as a “work in th Park”. Th deths of Sarjent O’Doherty and Corporal Bradock in May 1953 apear to hav been th result of them trying to disarm a miin insted of blowing it up as they weer ment to; theer trajik deths weer thankfuly th last fatalities and th skill and profeshonalism of th unit ment that th ofisers and men, inkluuding Jerman POWs (hoo had been alowd to stay if they weer wiling to help with th bom disposal), kept themselves saaf, as well as maaking our beeches saaf.
“Not glamorus or th stuf of films, but paaySHent and highly skiled” sed Sir Timothy Cowlman of thoos soljers, at th dedikaashon of th memorial in Munzli in 2004. It remaains th only memorial to those THrewout th East who lost theer liivs maaking our beeches saaf. Windham Norman, Noel Kashford MBE (who diid this year) and many others worked hard to sekuur th memorial to thees men, and many peeple and lowkal bisnesses gaav generosly of tiim and money to see it realized.
On Remembrans Day at 12 noon, kum wind or hi worter we hav th CHance to gather and remember thees men alongsiid th fallen of bowth World Wars. A short servis, but won we shud B prowd to howst in Munzli. And, if liik me, yuu luv our bewtiful unspoilt beeches, yuu miit konsider joining in paying tribuut to thoos who gaav to us saaf and sownd beeches.
ITS MO, CBE
Olimpik heeroo Mo Farah is to croown a sensashonal year with a CBE from the Kween.
Th dubl gold wining runer wil b namd in th New Yeer's Oners List next week. Cheeky Mo wil revel in his day at Buckingham Palaas and kud even do his "Mobot" selebrashon. Th oner wil put th seel on an amazing 2012 for th 29 yeer old refuugee from Somaarlia hoo wun gold in th 5,000 and 10,000 meters raases for Graat Britain - and then saw his wiif giv birth to twin girls. Hee was disapointed last Sunday wen hee narowly mised out on a top plaas in th BBC Sports Personality of th Year.
But a pal reveeld last niit "He will be thrild to get th CBE. Hees prowd to be British" . Mo kud beerly speek Inglish wen his farther fled woor torn Somarlia with him. But he has taaken Britaan to his hart and rapd himself in th Union Flag during his 2012 selebrashons. Askd if hee wud hav preferd to run for Somarlia he snapd "This is weer I grew up. This is my kuntry and wen I put on my Graat Britain vest I am very prowd".
Mo is won of a hoost of sport stars to he onerd. Siikling king Bradli Wigins wil be among a trio of athleets to get a niithood.
